With the rise of Covid-19’s Delta variant, Dolly Parton’s Jolene rewrite couldn’t be more timely

Yikes! The latest edition of the coronavirus, the Delta variant, is the “greatest threat” to US efforts to contain the pandemic and could reverse much of the progress the country has made, say infectious disease experts including White House chief medical advisor Dr. Anthony Fauci.

The problem is it’s promiscuity – it knows how to get around: at 60% more transmissible than previous strains experts are calling this “most contagious” variant “hyper-transmissible.” That’s why it’s expected to become the dominant Covid strain in the United States within a matter of weeks, poised to “pick off” the most vulnerable, especially in places with low vaccination rates.

And that’s the clue to avoid going back to lockdown: Vaccination. For instance, the Pfizer and Moderna vaccines are nearly 90% effective against the variant – so long as people receive both doses. Specifically, they “will protect [us] against getting very sick and being hospitalized and even dying from the Delta variant.”

Or as Dolly Parton puts it, echoing Jolene, “Vaccine, vaccine, vaccine, vaccine, I’m begging of you, please don’t hesitate.”

UPDATE: July 9, 2021.

More Evidence That Vaccine’s Work:

A story in The New York Times this morning headlined “Citing the Delta Variant, Pfizer Will Pursue Booster Shots and a New Vaccine,” is not going over well with the science community as evidenced by the sub-headline: “Scientists were critical of the announcement, pointing to evidence that the current two-dose regimen is powerfully effective against the coronavirus.”

Here’s the pushback against Pfizer from the scientists:

Vaccine Strength: “If you receive two doses of an mRNA vaccine, you are very well protected against severe disease, hospitalization and death with respect to any of the variants.”

The NYT summarizes: Taken together, the results suggest that two doses of vaccine are powerfully protective against all variants, as is one dose for people who have recovered from Covid-19 and have some natural immunity.

Risk that the unvaccinated pose to the rest of us: “Every unvaccinated person offers the virus additional opportunities to mutate into dangerous variants.”

Pfizer’s questionable motive: “Pfizer looks opportunistic by hanging an announcement on the back of very early and undigested data from Israel.”
