A CBD toothpaste is about to be launched across the US. Independent research tells us this matters

This is a first: A hemp-derived CBD toothpaste is about to be launched across the US in a store near you; for example, Walmart, Costco, Bed Bath & Beyond, Amazon, and VitaCost.

Zelira Therapeutics, an Australian based global therapeutic medicinal cannabis company is partnering with SprinJene, a New Jersey based oral care company to launch the toothpaste, the first of five over-the-counter oral cannabinoid products they’re on track to launch globally.

There’s something to this. As we reported in July, Belgian researchers found that CBD toothpaste and mouthwash “significantly” outperformed leading toothpaste brands Colgate and Oral-B, and the industry ‘gold standard’ mouthwash, when it came to reducing the pathogenic germ count on teeth and gums.

They also told us why this matters so much: dental plaque is the stuff of disease, both in your mouth and sometimes throughout your body:

Dental plaque is formed owing to the deposition of a combination of saliva, foods, and fluids on the tooth surface. The dental plaque formed on the tooth surface and gum line includes thousands of bacteria that convert food residues into acids, eventually leading to the initiation of dental diseases such as dental caries, gingivitis, and periodontal diseases . . . that have become a huge global burden owing to their direct relation with systemic diseases.

Importantly, the new toothpaste will contain a number of cannabinoids in addition to CBD which the above graph (from the Belgian study) shows us are effective against harmful bacteria. (DPSI = Dutch periodontal screening index.)
